2017 in Review - Top 10 Video Games
The gaming industry had a boom in 2017 with the release of the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X.
Each satisfied a different need for console gamers and in some cases introduced 4k gaming.
A console is nothing without an awesome game to play and here are the 10 we thought were the best in 2017.
Number 10 - Assassin's Creed: Origins
The team produced a really strong return open to the popular open-world series with the action moved to Egypt.
It was well worth the wait after they took a year off and came back with fresh new ideas.
Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Number 09 - Mario and Rabbits: Kingdom Battle
This surprise hit was often referred to as "X-Com for Kids" due to the turn-based battle system. A great game collaboration for Ubisoft and Nintendo.
Available on: Nintendo Switch
Number 08 - Injustice 2
Building on the success of the first game and companion comic series, the DC universe thrives on the video game screen more than it seems to in the cinema.
It's been called one of the best fighting games ever made, and it certainly has the most compelling story.
Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Number 07 - Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
This first-person Resident Evil title returned the franchise to its horror roots. Guaranteed to scare your pants off!
Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Number 06 - Cuphead
Hello, Cuphead, where have you been hiding?
The platformer takes inspiration from 1920s/1930s cartoons (think Steamboat Willie, the Micky Mouse animation).
It's fun and challenging in a totally old school way. Even though we can talk about its inspirations, there is really nothing else like it.
Available on: PC, Xbox One
Number 05 - Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus
Loud, large and just brilliant. First person shooters can tend to get a little bit repetitive, but when you can add a compelling storyline around an alternate universe based on a Nazi victory then we get a colourful and complex game that is full of empowering moments.
Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Number 04 - Horizon: Zero Dawn
2017 was the year of reinvention in the open-world genre and few did it better than the Horizon team. A brilliant story and amazing visuals. It's like all your favourite post-apocalyptic Sci-fi rolled into one.
Available on: PS4 exclusive
Number 03 - Destiny 2
The amazing depth of visuals and vastly improved storyline on the first title make Destiny the best shooter out this year. It does attract its critics but given the sheer scope of the game, it must take an incredible team to pull together such a beautiful game that you can play for an entire year til the next one. This year we also welcomed PC gamers to the universe who seem to be really engaging in the universe designed by Bungie.
Available on: Xbox One, PS4, PC
Number 02 - Mario Odyssey
Every now and then Nintendo delivers a Mario title that is like a swift uppercut reminder to all other platformers that Mario is the king.
Odyssey is this generation's reminder. Delivering the most fun you've had in a Mario game since Mario 64 (Nintendo 64) back in the day.
If you have a Switch this is a must own title, next to the game we have chosen as our winner.
Available on: Nintendo Switch
Number 01 - The Legend of Zelda
It's hard to believe that the "Game of the Year" was decided in March. Even though we had a stellar year in the gaming industry, none came close to this amazing role-playing action adventure.
Its open world environment was so rich you could seamlessly explore it for hours on end, in fact, months later we are still heading back in there to play and discover more. This may not just be a game of the year, but one that both changes and challenges the way we play in the future.
Given that this is a launch title for the Switch, I look forward to what developers come up with when they actually learn the system more. It will blow our minds.
